Graham Hunter has told BBC Radio Five Live that Pep Guardiola wants to Manchester United during his career ‘for a variety of reasons’.
Guardiola is set to announce his future next week and is widely expected to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season.
Both Manchester clubs are being heavily linked with Guardiola and although Manchester City are considered favourites, Hunter says his romantic connection to United has existed for a long time and has discussed his future with people close to Guardiola.
“If the cards fall his way, his wish is to sample life at Manchester United for a variety of reasons,” Hunter said.
Hunter goes on to talk about how he spoke to Sir Alex Ferguson about joining United as a player back before Juan Sebastian Veron was signed but it never materialised, so Pep has already entertained the idea of calling Old Trafford his home before.
Given his close connections to Barcelona, Hunter is well placed to be saying this about Guardiola and it has got United fans excited at the thought of him joining in the summer. For what it’s worth, Pep was my first choice to replace Sir Alex but it of course never materialised.
Pep’s next move depends on a variety of factors but he’ll have multiple offers after leaving Bayern and that ultimately means it will boil down to his own personal choice.
In that sense, the idea of helping re-build United instead of walking into a ready-made world-class team will appeal to him greatly or put him off the idea of Old Trafford altogether right now. Hopefully its the former.
