Memphis signed for Man United from PSV Eindhoven this summer with much fanfare but the Dutchman has so far struggled to make a real impact at Old Trafford.
He was dropped from the starting XI following United’s 3-0 loss against Arsenal in October but he has looked bright upon his return in recent weeks. Parker, who won four major trophies at United, insisted Memphis has the quality to score goals.
When asked if Memphis can be the solution to United’s problems, Parker said: ”Yes, Memphis has got an arrogance and he’s a bit flamboyant.
“The problem is that van Gaal has got to him and said ‘you can’t do that’. He’s taken it all away from him. He’s telling him how he can and can’t dress. But if it makes him a better player and he’s comfortable doing it, it’s okay. Van Gaal has to start working with individuals rather than collectively because everybody’s different in today’s world.”
Memphis was expected to hit the ground running at United but it was a big ask for him to adjust to the Premier League so quickly.
There is undoubtedly a quality player in the youngster but he needs time until supporters see the best of him. How long fans are willing to be patient with Memphis remains to be seen.
