Manchester United injury latest ahead of Norwich: Herrera, Smalling and Rooney back

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United have finally had some positive injury news after a sustained period which has seen the squad pulled into disarray.

Here are all the updates on injured players from Louis van Gaal during his press conference.

On Ander Herrera, Wayne Rooney and Chris Smalling: “There are more or less three players who are trained this week, for a full week, so that’s not bad. The players who have trained this week are Rooney, Herrera, Smalling and Young is also coming back I think, but we have to wait and see.”

On Ashley Young: “In the last match he had a slight problem, he was feeling something and we cannot take the risk I think. We have investigated that this week. He shall train today [Friday], so we shall have to wait and see if he is available.”

On Jesse Lingard: “He is out of the question.”

On Matteo Darmian: “He is out of the question.”

Out of all the players who are returning, Herrera is the most important one for me. He’s so influential for our midfield and we haven’t replaced him since he got injured.

As for Darmian being out at right-back, I presume Guillermo Varela is going to continue there and Chris Smalling coming back into the heart of defence should help him improve.

Wayne Rooney coming back into the team? That can be a good or a bad thing, depending on which Rooney turns up. Hopefully the right one!
