Louis van Gaal has confirmed that Wayne Rooney, Ander Herrera and Chris Smalling have trained for a full week ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash against Norwich City.

Van Gaal also revealed that Ashley Young is making progress but that supporters will have to “wait and see” if he plays at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Jesse Lingard and Matteo Darmian remain out of action due to injury:

Herrera and Smalling’s return, in particular, will be music to the ears of fans as Man United look to turn around a period of turgid form.

The defensive stability that United have shown for the majority of the season wasn’t there against Bournemouth in Smalling’s absence and it will be a big boost if he returns to the starting XI.

Meanwhile, United’s problems up top have been well documented and Herrera should go a long way to improving that, assuming, of course, that van Gaal plays him. The Dutchman is seemingly yet to be won over despite some impressive displays from Herrera in the No.10 role this term.
