Tony Cottee: Louis van Gaal has wasted money at Manchester United

Tony Cottee believes that Louis van Gaal has wasted money at Manchester United and that Anthony Martial is shouldering too much responsibility at Old Trafford.

Man United were dismal on Saturday as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against Norwich City.

Van Gaal was already under pressure at United following an awful run of results and the loss may be the final nail in the coffin for him. Sky Sports pundit Cottee insisted van Gaal, who has spent over £250m since taking charge at United, cannot be trusted with more funds.

“A lot of the money they have spent has been wasted, I wouldn’t give Van Gaal anymore money in the January transfer window,” Cottee said.

“Players are playing below par and there is too much responsibility on [Anthony] Martial’s shoulders.

“There were countless times [against Norwich] where the ball went flashing across the face of goal in both halves and there wasn’t a Javier Hernandez or James Wilson there for the simple tap-ins – there was no one in the box.

“This is a huge problem for them and I do fear for Manchester United, I don’t know where they are going as a football club.”

Van Gaal got rid of a lot of deadwood at Old Trafford and, in his defence, the likes of Martial, Luke Shaw and Memphis Depay should prove to be good buys in the future.

The problem is that the Dutchman has sapped them of confidence and it is clear that the players have lost faith in his philosophy. Van Gaal’s position is quickly becoming untenable and United may have to make a difficult decision over his future soon.
