Manchester United fans baffled by Ander Herrera’s omission from the starting XI against Norwich City

Manchester United fans were left bemused by Louis van Gaal’s decision to omit Ander Herrera from the starting XI for the game against Norwich City on Saturday.

The Dutchman instead chose to play Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick in the middle of the park despite Herrera’s return to fitness.

Van Gaal did bring Herrera on after an hour played but it was too little too late as Man United suffered a 2-1 defeat. United fans voiced their disapproval of the move:

United looked brighter when Herrera came on and Anthony Martial scored five minutes after his introduction.

The Spaniard’s creative spark is there for all to see but the famously conservative van Gaal doesn’t seem to want to fit him into his system.

It may ultimately prove to be his downfall, as defeat against the Canaries has left van Gaal on the brink of the sack. Perhaps a different manager will recognise Herrera’s qualities.
