Graeme Souness: Ryan Giggs will be the next manager of Manchester United

by Ben Topliss

Graeme Souness believes Ryan Giggs will take charge at Manchester United if the club decides to sack Louis van Gaal.

Man United are going through a terrible run of form and van Gaal is under huge pressure at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola have been touted as potential successors to van Gaal but Souness insisted that United should look no further than Giggs.

“I think the next manager will be Ryan Giggs. No matter what happens,” Souness said.

“It’s very hard to say over the next few games that they will not be looking at Van Gaal very closely because the results and the way they are playing has not been good enough. I think he is going to be examined during this holiday period by the people who make decisions at United. And whether it’s short-term or long-term, I can only see Ryan Giggs [taking over].

“They went for David Moyes – Fergie’s Chosen One – it didn’t work out. They’ve gone for someone with a fantastic CV, vastly experienced and it’s not happening to date for them and I think the obvious way to go is what you have got there already. I go back to the last time when Jose was muted to be going there and Bobby Charlton came out and said ‘no way’.

“I know Fergie [Sir Alex Ferguson] is a fan, how big a fan we don’t really know. The reasons that Bobby Charlton gave a few years ago will still be there today.”

In his defence, van Gaal has done a good job of steadying the ship at United following the disastrous reign of David Moyes.

The Dutchman has laid some foundations at the club but it is clear that an elite manager is needed to take them to the next level. While Giggs is a United legend who would be a hugely popular appointment with fans, he has next to no management experience whatsoever. Perhaps United should go with a safer bet, particularly as the likes of Mourinho and Guardiola are readily available.
