Will Louis van Gaal be sacked on Wednesday afternoon?

by Sam Peoples

After Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Norwich City at the weekend, there has been a seismic shift in fan and press opinion towards the future of Louis van Gaal.

From the fans’ point of view, a second consecutive defeat in poor fashion after the disappointment of a Champions League exit has been so frustrating. There has been a distinct lack of response from either the players or van Gaal himself following the loss away at Wolfsburg.

One look at a video of the feelings inside Old Trafford after the game was over against Norwich says it all:

From the press’ point of view, the pressure has been intensifying on him for some time now and it’s only increasing.

One look at some newspaper back-pages from the last few days sums up the general consensus at the moment – van Gaal is on the verge of being sacked.

It is not yet a question of when but still one of ‘if’ but with Jose Mourinho now available, is there a chance Louis van Gaal could lose his job on Wednesday afternoon in an announcement at the Stoke City pre-match press conference?

Hardly anything is implausible in modern day football but I personally don’t think it could happen. That being said, I do feel it is on the precipice of being a foregone conclusion – a loss to Stoke or Chelsea could prove to be the final nail in the coffin. Yet, it’s not impossible.

I can’t see past van Gaal not being Man United’s manager come the summer. His philosophy has hit a brick wall and we’ve stagnated massively since October because of it. He doesn’t seem to want to adapt to his surroundings, instead he’s persevering and that lack of change is taking us down the wrong path.

We’ve gone from one extreme with David Moyes – a man who had no plan whatsoever – to a man in van Gaal who is so plan driven that he won’t consider anything else. In different ways, neither extreme has proven to be the recipe for success.

Regardless of whether he is sacked or not, van Gaal’s press conference on Wednesday is going to be an extremely interesting and potentially revealing one.
