Andy Gray expects Manchester United to take their ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity to sign Jose Mourinho.
Reports suggest that the former Chelsea manager would be willing to take a pay cut to secure his ‘dream role’ at Old Trafford.
Louis van Gaal has come under pressure after his side suffered an early Champions League exit and has failed to deliver a single win in the past six games.
Gray believes Mourinho would be the best candidate for the job and Man United could regret it if they don’t act quickly.
“I see Mourinho as the only one of the top three or four managers in the world available,” Gray told talkSPORT.
“You look at the really top names and Ancelotti has gone [to Bayern Munich], Pep Guardiola looks set for Manchester City. Would anyone else be big enough come in? I don’t see anybody.
“The fact that Jose is available has probably rushed them into doing something. I think if Jose was still at Chelsea then Van Gaal would would get little bit more time to sort it out but this might be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get Mourinho, at the right time, into Manchester United.
“I think there is every chance it could happen. Louis is overseeing a club and a side that are not playing with a smile on their faces. I don’t get the impression the players are enjoying it, I know the fans aren’t enjoying watching it, and there is one of the best coaches in world football sitting on his backside, twiddling his thumbs right now.”
Mourinho might have a great record over his career but few managers come with as much baggage as the Portuguese manager.
He always brings success but inevitably it is followed by a downfall of equal measure, at least that has been the case at all his previous clubs.
In that sense, is it really a once in a lifetime opportunity to bring him into Mourinho? Let me know your thoughts in the comments because this really has split the fans down the middle.
