Wayne Rooney insists Manchester United’s squad is behind Louis van Gaal

Wayne Rooney says Manchester United’s players and ‘working hard and fighting’ for Louis van Gaal.

Man United’s third consecutive defeat with the 2-1 loss to Norwich has intensified the growing pressures on van Gaal’s job to the point where the media believe he is on the verge of being sacked.

Despite those outside pressures, Rooney knows it is important that the United squad sticks together and performs.

“Obviously you have a lot of people talking about things they believe are happening but in reality a lot of people who are writing that stuff don’t know what’s happening,” Rooney told Sky Sports News.

“We’re working hard and fighting for the manger to try to get results and turn the season around. It’s important we all stick together.”

All that fans have to go on is how the team performs on the pitch. While Rooney is completely correct in that we don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes, the fact we’re playing so badly right now is indicative of our wider problems.

He added: “As a group of players we know we can do better and we’re all working together to try to come up with the best solution to help us win football matches.

“It’s not nice when you’re getting criticised every game. It’s tough for the players to deal with. We get hurt because we’re proud people and proud to play for Manchester United. When it’s not going right it’s hard to take and frustrating.”

“We all have families and sometimes there’s a lot of stuff that gets written which is not nice for your family to see.

“It’s okay for me to deal with but there’s people in my family who aren’t used to it and it’s tough for them.”

United’s players have been talking the talk all season but rarely have we walked the walk – that is exactly why fans’ frustration has boiled over after the Norwich loss.

As for Rooney, he has had an atrocious season individually, so he should be concentrating on improving himself first and foremost. As United captain, there’s more pressure on him than others to stand up and be accounted for.

Everybody knows that van Gaal’s future is in the balance at the moment, so if the players don’t give everything to come away from Stoke with three points, then real questions have to be asked over their commitment and desire to really give everything for van Gaal.
