Wayne Rooney splits opinion among Manchester United fans with display against Chelsea

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney split opinion among fans with his performance in the 0-0 draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford on Monday.

The skipper regained his place in the starting lineup after being left on the bench for the trip to Stoke and he was impressive during the first half. Rooney started to look like his old self again as Man United put immense pressure on the Chelsea defence and were unlucky not to take the lead. The 30-year-old had United’s only shot on target in the first 45 minutes with a long-range drive which Thibaut Courtois was forced to tip wide of the mark.

However, as the team’s performance and energy levels dipped so did Rooney’s as he started to struggle in the second period. As seen many times this season, the striker was unable to get involved in build-up play and was unable to finish a huge chance near the end of the game, after some brilliant work by Cameron Borthwick-Jackson on the left wing.

For the first time this season, Rooney really looked like a player who could be an important part of the United squad for the rest of the campaign. He showed signs that when the team is playing well, he too can be integral to the overall positive aspects of the side’s play.

However, as captain, many will feel that Rooney should be the standout performer no matter how the rest of the team are playing. With the club going through a tough spell, there is no doubt that Rooney is desperately needed. Everyone associated with the club will be hoping that the skipper can galvanise the squad and use the performance against Chelsea as a springboard for the rest of the campaign.
