Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United’s display against Chelsea on Monday was as if Ryan Giggs was in charge of the club.
Man United have been dismal in recent weeks but they were much better against the champions at Old Trafford.
However, Louis van Gaal’s side lacked a cutting edge and the game finished 0-0, meaning they have now gone eight games without a win in all competitions. Carragher insisted that it was not a “typical” van Gaal performance.
“If I hadn’t read a paper or watched television in the last 48 hours, I’d have thought it was Ryan Giggs’s first game in charge,” Carragher wrote in his Daily Mail column.
“I’m not saying he was responsible for tactics but this was not a typical Louis van Gaal performance from Manchester United. This looked like the team of old with the way they attacked and pressed.”
United attacked with a verve and swagger which has not been on show as of late, particularly in the first half.
The pressure had been building on van Gaal but it appears the display earned him a stay of execution. Anything less than three points against Swansea City next time out will surely signal the end of the Dutchman’s reign at Old Trafford.
