Rooney scored Man United’s second goal of the afternoon with an audacious flick following excellent work from Anthony Martial.
It was a superb strike and one that ensured United ended an eight game winless streak in all competitions. Schweinsteiger insisted Martial and Rooney are “very important” to the side.
“It was very important for us to win. Today the victory was very important. It was not so easy after the equaliser but we kept going. It was not so good after we lose three matches against Bournemouth, Norwich and Stoke, but we responded well,” Schweinsteiger said.
“The team has character and you can see that. We tried to press. We tried to control the game and score goals. We’ve had chances to score goals. It was important to get two today.
“The influence of Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney is very important for us. They can score goals. It was an unbelievable goal from Wayne. Unfortunately, he couldn’t score against Chelsea, but I think he will be very happy today.”
Despite the result, United didn’t put in the best performance against Swansea, with the first half in particular painful to watch at times. However, Louis van Gaal needed a result at Old Trafford and he got just that.
Rooney, meanwhile, will be delighted with his performance as well as his goal. He went into the match off the back of an excellent display against Chelsea and the United captain looked menacing and enterprising once again. United now need a run of victories if they are to relieve the pressure on van Gaal further.
