Charlie Nicholas: Ryan Giggs played a part in Manchester United’s improved display against Chelsea

Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas believes Ryan Giggs played a part in Manchester United’s improved display against Chelsea on Monday.

Man United went into the clash having suffered dismal defeats against the likes of Bournemouth, Norwich and Stoke but they were much better against the Premier League champions.

Anthony Martial and Juan Mata both struck the woodwork and United were unlucky not to secure all three points. Nicholas insisted Giggs motivated United against Chelsea.

“Giggs stormed off after the Stoke defeat with a furious look on his face and I think he could have played a part in the improved display against Chelsea,” he said.

“I think he’s gone to the attack-minded players and said ‘Come on, it’s time you guys started delivering’.

“‘The defence has been doing okay but we need you to start performing – Rooney, Martial and Mata we need more from you’, and that may be marked the improvement on Monday.

“I’m hoping Ryan is getting them angry and maybe that’s just what they need.”

It looked like the players had lost confidence in Louis van Gaal against Stoke, Bournemouth and Norwich and it is unlikely that the Dutchman was the sole reason for their improved display against Chelsea.

If Giggs did play a part, it would show how much respect the players have for the Welshman. Giggs would be a popular replacement for van Gaal if the veteran boss was sacked but there is still a question mark over his inexperience at the highest level. United will be looking for another good display against Swansea City next time out.
