Louis van Gaal: I substituted Ander Herrera against Swansea City to waste time

Louis van Gaal has revealed that he substituted Ander Herrera in Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Swansea City on Saturday because he wanted to waste time.

Swansea were guilty of wasting time themselves at Old Trafford as Man United sealed the three points thanks to goals from Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney.

Herrera was brought off for Michael Carrick in added time towards the end of the game. Van Gaal admitted that he wanted to return the favour to the Swans as they took their time during the game.

“With Herrera, it was because I wanted to waste time, as Swansea did all match,” he said.

Van Gaal was in desperate need of a win as he looked to end his side’s eight game winless streak and he did just that against Swansea.

There had been numerous calls for the Dutchman to be sacked but the result against Swansea will relieve the pressure on him somewhat. Next up for United is an FA Cup clash against Sheffield United and van Gaal will be keen on taking the team all the way in the competition.
