Manchester United lost to Schalke 4-3 in the last Group B game in the first stage of the Mercedes Benz Junior Cup. It was a disappointing defeat as Schalke had lost both of their opening two games.
George Dorrington was back in goal for the final group match. United appeared tired in the first half and there was a corresponding drop off in work rate. This allowed Schalke to have decent possession, and to slowly build up their forward moves.
A freekick was given to United but it was quickly turned over by Schalke to move down the other end of the pitch and score before half time through Erdinc Karakas.
Early in the second half Schalke scored a second, this time through Alessandro Fiore-Tapia, and Dorrington will be disappointed that he didn’t do better to save it.
United pulled a goal back through Kayne Diedrick-Roberts, but it wasn’t long before Schalke restored their two goal cushion, with Tin Plavotic on the scoresheet for the Germans.
The Reds came back again, this time through a fantastic strike from Callum Whelan from distance. However, similar to the first goal, it wasn’t long before the Germans responded with a second from Fiore-Tapia.
Then Josh Doughty scored for United as the match ended 4-3.
That defeat saw United finish bottom of Group B. The U19s will face the second placed team of Group A, Rapid Vienna, later this afternoon in Group 2 of the second stage of tournament.
