Carlo Ancelotti turned down Manchester United move – report

Carlo Ancelotti turned down a move to Manchester United earlier this term after being contacted by Ed Woodward, according to the Daily Mail.

Man United executive vice-chairman Woodward reportedly contacted Ancelotti in mid-November to discuss what his plans were for the rest of the season.

However, by that point, Ancelotti was in advanced talks to replace Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich, which was eventually confirmed in December.

Woodward’s move for Ancelotti was made prior to United’s downturn in results over the festive period, where they went eight games without a win in all competitions.

The Italian was said to feel ‘more wanted’ by Bayern and that he had greater confidence in the structures already in place at the Allianz Arena.

There have been conflicting reports over how confident United are in van Gaal and his job security at the club is far from certain.

The majority of supporters thought that he would be let go following the loss against Norwich City in December but the Dutchman survived and he has overseen an upturn in fortunes against Chelsea and Swansea City. If United really aren’t confident in van Gaal, they would be wise to be decisive, particularly with Jose Mourinho reportedly ready and willing to take over at the club.
