Andreas Pereira hoping to play against Sheffield United

Andreas Pereira is hoping his performance for Manchester United’s U21s against Tottenham Hotspur this week will earn him a spot in the team to face Sheffield United.

The 19-year-old midfielder got on the score-sheet twice in the 3-1 victory including a wonderful goal direct from a corner, so he certainly did all he did to show he deserved the chance.

Speaking like Louis van Gaal, Pereira said he needed to improve his match rhythm so was happy to have got the game under his belt with the U21s.

“I think I need some match rhythm so it’s good to play with the Under-21s,” Pereira told MUTV.

“It’s a good level so it’s useful to play here tonight and hopefully I can get more minutes.

“The level of the first team is a bit higher, of course, but both are high intensity so it’s good to play here. Hopefully, I can show the manager with my sharpness and the goals that I can maybe play on Saturday. 2015 was a very big year for me but I am hoping this one can be a good year as well.”

Pereira’s a cracking prospect who has really impressed me with his progress over the last 12 months. My main criticism of him as an U21s player was his inconsistency and the fact games could simply pass him by one week; he’s dramatically improved in that respect and his performances have improved immeasurably because of it.

As he showed against Spurs this week, Pereira is way above the level of U21s football and an FA Cup game at home against Sheffield United is the sort of match where Andreas should be given the opportunity.
