Manchester United’s Ander Herrera excited to begin FA Cup campaign

Ander Herrera is relishing the opportunity to begin Manchester United’s FA Cup campaign against Sheffield United on Saturday.

Herrera had a taste of the competition last term but Man United’s run ended prematurely as they were beaten 2-1 by Arsenal.

With United out of the Capital One Cup and Champions League, the FA Cup represents their best chance of a trophy this season. Herrera backed his teammates to start with a win against Sheffield United.

“We didn’t go too far in the last FA Cup but I enjoyed the games a lot,” Herrera said.

“It’s a great competition and the organisation in England is fantastic, I have to say. Now we start at home and it would be good to win.”

Herrera scored in United’s trip to Yeovil Town in the competition last season and played in visits to Cambridge United and Preston North End.

“In this competition, maybe I prefer to play away because when you visit lower-league teams, like we did last season, the atmosphere in their stadiums is incredible.

“I know we are lucky because we are playing at home in front of our fans this weekend, and I always love to play at Old Trafford. But if we beat Sheffield United, I’m hoping we get an away draw because I really enjoy those trips. It’s a very enjoyable competition and a nice one that we can hopefully win this season.”

Louis van Gaal’s FA Cup run last season ended in particularly dismal fashion as his side were knocked out thanks to a winner from Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck, who had previously played for United.

United are struggling to get into the top four of the Premier League, let alone win it, and they will look to the FA Cup as their last realistic chance of silverware this term. A long run would do wonders for confidence in the under pressure van Gaal, while defeat against Sheffield United would be a catastrophe.
