Jesse Lingard has insisted that Manchester United are aiming to win the FA Cup this season.
Out of the Capital One Cup and the Champions League, the FA Cup represents Man United’s best chance of silverware this term.
However, United have not won the 145-year-old competition since beating Millwall 3-0 in the 2004 final. Lingard believes his side have a “good chance” of winning the Cup this time around.
“We haven’t won it since then but we feel like we have a good chance of getting our name on the trophy this season,” Lingard said.
“It’s a competition that’s still highly regarded in English football – we all want to win it and to do it this year would be a great feeling for us.”
United should always be aiming to win every competition that they are in but their form has been awful for the majority of the campaign and there is nothing to suggest that they can go all the way. It is similar to their hopes in the Europa League – there are some excellent teams still left in the tournament.
First of all, they have to get past what will be a very tough test against Sheffield United on Saturday. The Blades will have nothing to lose and they will give it their all at Old Trafford. A loss against them would be disastrous in terms of confidence in van Gaal.
