Both players weren’t in the match-day squad which led to questions over whether they were rested ahead of Newcastle United on Tuesday or if they had sustained an injury.
The good news is van Gaal confirmed neither player was absent due to an injury but given how little football either have played in January, it’s a surprise to hear their fitness is questionable.
Young has only played 78 minutes of football in January while Schneiderlin has only completed one game, so their fitness shouldn’t really be an issue. Maybe van Gaal was talking more about their sharpness rather than fitness?
Either way, van Gaal has to use his squad correctly over the next week because we’ve got two away trips to Newcastle and Liverpool, so rotation was certainly needed.
