Video: Paul Scholes blasts Manchester United and Louis van Gaal

by Ben Topliss

Paul Scholes pulled no punches in his criticism of Louis van Gaal and Manchester United in the wake of his former side’s 1-0 win over Sheffield United on Saturday.

Man United were abysmal from an attacking point of view at Old Trafford and they were lucky that Sheffield United conceded a late penalty which led to Wayne Rooney’s winner.

Scholes labelled van Gaal’s side as “boring” and insisted that United are trying to put “square pegs in round holes”.

You can hear the exasperation in Scholes’ voice; it is clearly paining him to watch United, a club he played for with distinction for a number of years, put in dismal performance after dismal performance.

Van Gaal had relieved some of the pressure on him with improved displays against Swansea and Chelsea recently but you get the sense that the game against Sheffield United brought United right back to square one.

Of course, United got the result they wanted but the display evoked memories of the David Moyes era – it was that bad. Van Gaal can count himself very lucky if he finishes the campaign still in charge of United.
