Louis van Gaal is not expecting Manchester United to sign any players in the January transfer window.
Man United have been linked with the likes of Lazio midfielder Felipe Anderson as well as Leicester City’s in-form striker Jamie Vardy, as well as a host of other players just like we are every January and summer.
Despite obvious deficiencies in almost every area of the pitch, van Gaal doesn’t think any new players will arrive and indicates the players he wants aren’t available but it’s very interesting to hear him say he wants to sign a right winger which fits his ‘profile’.
“I don’t think that we shall do business in January,” van Gaal said.
“When there is a chance to make the selection better then we shall do it but I don’t think we shall do that.”
“I have said also in the (summer) transfer period that we need creative players with speed and we don’t have that too much.
“Juan Mata is playing the right side and he is doing fantastically well because he always has a big contribution for our team, but he is not a right winger in the profile I have.
“But it is not so easy to purchase players who are better than Mata because even though he is in a different profile, he is a very good right winger in our way of playing.”
Mata has been one of our most creative players this season and contributes both goals and assists to the team, but van Gaal’s made it clear he wants somebody who is more suited to that role.
I think Ashley Young‘s performance against Swansea City from the right-wing showed how important it is to have somebody who can dribble past a player in that position, which isn’t something Mata can offer.
Whether or not van Gaal is in the job long enough to bring in a more natural winger remains to be seen but it’s clear that as good as Mata has been at points this season, he’s not necessarily van Gaal’s long-term preference in that position.
