Rio Ferdinand: Louis van Gaal would have gone ‘bananas’ at Manchester United defence following Newcastle draw

Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Louis van Gaal “probably went bananas” after watching Manchester United spurn a number of chances in the 3-3 draw against Newcastle United on Tuesday.

Wayne Rooney, Jesse Lingard and Marouane Fellaini all missed golden opportunities to take the game away from Newcastle at St James Park but Paul Dummett’s late equaliser earned a point for the Magpies.

It was a frustrating result as Man United performed much better from an attacking point of view than they have in recent weeks. Ferdinand, who played for United between 2002 and 2014, believes van Gaal would have been “livid” with the missed chances.

“He looks livid. I think with the chances they created and didn’t put away, he probably went bananas in the changing room after,” Ferdinand said.

“You can understand the frustration, because United put a lot of good things together and he would have been coming out there bouncing if they’d won the game.”

United certainly could have done with a defender of Ferdinand’s calibre against Newcastle as they were all over the place at times.

With the likes of Daley Blind and Ashley Young fulfilling unusual roles at the back, it was inevitable that United would be found out and that proved to be the case. They will need reinforcements in defence sooner rather than later.
