Louis van Gaal calls reporter ‘fat’ following Newcastle United draw

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has been recorded calling a journalist a “fat man” following his side’s 3-3 draw against Newcastle United on Tuesday.

Van Gaal looked to have been irritated by a question about the recent criticism of Wayne Rooney, who scored twice and set up another at St James Park.

The veteran Dutch manager accused the media of criticising Rooney and left the room with a jab at one reporter in particular:

Rooney has taken his fair share of flak this term following some awful performances but he produced a real captain’s performance against Newcastle.

It was the first time this season where you could really say that the Man United captain grabbed a game by the scruff of it’s neck and made a big impact on the result.

It is good to see van Gaal defending his players but the jibe, which amused the assembled media, came across as childish. Supporters would much prefer him and his side to do their talking on the pitch.
