Eric Steele: David de Gea can emulate Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar at Manchester United

Former Manchester United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele believes David de Gea has the potential to match the achievements of Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar at the club.

De Gea made his 200th appearance for Man United in the 3-3 draw against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Tuesday.

The Spaniard has come a long way since struggling early on in his United career and he is now regarded to be one of the best keepers in the world. Steele insisted De Gea will only get better.

“He has got the potential to be a great like Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar,” Steele said.

“The boy could be held in that regard because he is only going to get better. He came to United at 19, so you are looking now at a mature, physically developed goalkeeper. He has got better and he is going to get even better. He is 25 now. Schmeichel didn’t go to United until he was 28, so this boy – this man, now – has got so much more to come.”

De Gea conceded three goals against Newcastle but he produced a pair of excellent stops to deny Moussa Sissoko and Georginio Wijnaldum during the clash.

He was close to joining Real Madrid in the summer but the deal collapsed and United should be thanking their lucky stars that it did. United aren’t in the best situation right now but De Gea has been there to prevent it from getting worse.
