While Manchester United were much better from an attacking point of view in the 3-3 draw against Newcastle United last time out, it is likely that Louis van Gaal will set up his side to be much more defensive against Liverpool on Sunday.
Newcastle seemed to carve open Man United on a number of occasions and the scoreline could have been worse were it not for a couple of wonderful saves from David de Gea.
Van Gaal may be tempted to reinstate Juan Mata to the starting XI against Liverpool as the Spaniard is good at keeping the ball, which should allow United to establish an element of control at Anfield:
Jurgen Klopp has injected pace and energy into his Liverpool side and it is important that United quieten what will be a very hostile atmosphere.
The hope is that Bastian Schweinsteiger also returns to the starting XI as his experience should prove invaluable.
While United supporters have been crying out for their side to take more risks lately, it would be unwise to be expansive against Liverpool as van Gaal’s makeshift defence have been far from convincing.
