In his pre-match press conference on Friday, Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal revealed that Michael Carrick and Bastian Schweinsteiger will not be fit to face Liverpool this weekend, leaving him with a selection headache when it comes to midfield.
Juan Mata may then move to a central attacking role, with Jesse Lingard on the wing. In theory, it would give United a threat on the flanks but van Gaal would have wanted more experience in midfield in order to establish an element of ‘control’ at Anfield:
Herrera has performed below par in a deeper role at points this season but he is the lesser of two evils when it comes to choosing between him and Fellaini.
That being said, Herrera’s mobility may come in handy when it comes to combating the threat of Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson and Roberto Firmino.
Elsewhere, Wayne Rooney will be hoping to continue his good form against Liverpool. The United captain has started 2016 brilliantly, scoring twice and setting up another in the 3-3 draw against Newcastle United last time out.
