Guillem Balague says Manchester United have put in an offer of €20m for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez but doesn’t believe there is any chance of him moving to Old Trafford.
Links started this week linking the Spaniard to Man United and within a couple of days they had grown into reports which said we’d sent a delegation over to Spain to discuss a potential deal for Niguez.
Now, speaking on Sky Sports, Balague has said a bid has gone in: “The latest I’ve heard is Manchester United have put an offer of 20m euros on the table but Atletico Madrid don’t want to let him go,” Balague said. “And considering the ban, they won’t let him go, so I think that’s the end of that.
“Even if they met the buy-out clause, the player still has to want to go, and as it stands, he doesn’t.”

If this is true, what are United trying to achieve in chasing a player who doesn’t want to leave with a bid that is less than a release clause at a club who is now banned from signing players for two years from this summer? It would be utter madness but well within the reach of Ed Woodward.
We need to learn from our mistakes over the last two windows and chase attainable players because if we spend a lot of time chasing air again in the summer window, there is every chance we’ll miss out on the signings we really need, regardless of who is our manager.
