The 20-year-old has been working hard on his recovery after what was a horrific double leg break injury against PSV Eindhoven back in September last year.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, van Gaal revealed his bone is growing well and insists that everything is on track.
“Shaw was with his surgeon and everything is going well. His bone is growing and that is very positive, but he needs time,” van Gaal said.
When questioned further about whether Shaw could return before the end of this season, van Gaal added: “Yes, but when I say that then everybody thinks he is coming back within three months but it is not like that, you cannot say that.
“At this moment he is ahead in his rehabilitation but there are also weeks when he is slow. At the end, it is mostly the same [length of] time.”
All in all, it’s an excellent update on Shaw’s current situation. Everything is still going to plan, his surgeon is happy at the growth of his bone and at this moment in time he is actually of schedule. That’s as good as we could have asked for at this stage.
Whether or not we see Shaw playing in a United shirt again before the end of this season remains to be seen but it’s excellent to see how well he has already done to get to this stage.
