Jamie Carragher: Liverpool were the better team against Manchester United

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool were the better side against Manchester United despite their 1-0 defeat at Anfield on Sunday.

Wayne Rooney was on hand to score the winner for Man United following good work from Marouane Fellaini. The captain’s winner was the only shot on target that the Reds could muster throughout the game but it turned out to be the only one that mattered, as they took all three points back to Manchester.

Liverpool may feel they were unlucky to come away with nothing having dominated for large parts of the game. David de gea in the United goal was tested on numerous occasions but proved his worth time and again to keep a clean sheet. The Merseysiders never looked like getting past the Spaniard and were made to rue their missed chances.

Carragher agreed that in derby games like these, the performance doesn’t always matter, saying: “Before the game you were thinking, who will get the goals? It’s been a problem for Liverpool all season.

“We said at half-time how poor the game was. I think Liverpool were the better team but it doesn’t matter in games like that – maybe [it will matter] in the bigger picture. But today, for the United fans and players, these games are about winning – and that’s what they’ve done.”

Carragher will know all about what defeat to United at Anfield feels like and he will be as disappointed as the rest of the club’s supporters that they couldn’t score against their rivals. It was a huge game for both teams and United took their opportunity to go six points clear of their opponents and closer towards the top four in the Premier League.
