Marouane Fellaini receives mixed reviews from Manchester United fans following display against Liverpool

Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini put in a disappointing performance in his side’s smash and grab 1-0 win against Liverpool on Sunday despite his pivotal contribution which led to Wayne Rooney’s winner.

The Belgian started in the holding midfield role alongside Morgan Schneiderlin but struggled to get into the game throughout and many were getting frustrated with his display in one of the biggest games of the season.

Fellaini constantly gave the ball away and rarely won his aerial challenges in midfield, meaning Man United couldn’t get on the ball often enough:

However, the 28-year-old played a crucial part in Rooney’s winner, winning a header from a corner that hit the crossbar before the skipper converted the rebound. Despite the below par showing from him, supporters were grateful for his involvement for the goal which helped United to their second win over Liverpool this season:

It is a result that will definitely buoy the side going into the business end of the season, as any win at Anfield would do. Despite the final score, the Reds will need to be wary going forward this season given the performance from the team, in which they managed only one shot on target.

Many feel that Fellaini’s presence in midfield is detrimental to United but with Bastian Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick both out injured, Louis van Gaal chose to persist with him and it eventually paid off. His impact for the winner might paper over the cracks from an otherwise awful display but Reds fans will not be thinking about that as they celebrate their second win at Anfield in as many seasons.
