Peter Schmeichel: Manchester United were lucky to beat Liverpool

Peter Schmeichel has insisted Manchester United were lucky to beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday.

Man United were second best for the majority of the contest and the likes of Roberto Firmino and Emre Can spurned good opportunities to put the hosts in front.

As it panned out, Wayne Rooney scored a late winner to secure all three points for Louis van Gaal’s side. Schmeichel believes United can count themselves lucky to have won.

“How Manchester United won that, I do know know,” Schmeichel said.

“It’s the way football is being played at the moment. Not a lot of things are happening in the games. It was a set-piece and the other teams switches off slightly, and Manchester United took advantage of that. It was three unexpected points. United didn’t play very well at all.”

Liverpool were certainly the better team at Anfield but, at the end of the day, the result is what matters and United came away with a crucial three points.

The result leaves Liverpool in a precarious position in the Premier League while United will be looking to push on against Southampton next time out. United were fortunate to win against Liverpool but their luck will soon run out and performances undoubtedly have to improve.
