Jermaine Jenas: Manchester United should be interested in Emmanuel Adebayor

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jermaine Jenas believes Manchester United should be one of a number of clubs interested in signing Emmanuel Adebayor.

Adebayor has been a free agent since September after being let go by Tottenham Hotspur.

The Togolese forward has had a number of high profile bust-ups with clubs over the years but Jenas believes Man United could “feed” his ego.

“Ade is the kind of player who needs his ego to be fed, and any manager who has done that has been rewarded with top performances,” Jenas wrote in his Yahoo Sport column.

“That’s why, if I were a Premier League manager in need of goals this month, I would break the bank to get Adebayor for the next six months. And there are a lot of clubs that fall into that category: Crystal Palace, Man United, Norwich, Newcastle. These kinds of clubs could do a lot worse than signing Adebayor on a short-term deal. And for those near the bottom, he will almost guarantee you safety.”

It is highly unlikely that United would gamble on Adebayor despite their troubles in front of goal this term.

Adebayor is now 31 and the wages that he would demand would not be worth the risk of having him, even on a six-month deal. There were high hopes for Angel di Maria at Old Trafford last season but he was clearly unhappy in Manchester and he ended up moving to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer. It’s safe to say that United will want to avoid a repeat situation.
