Cameron Borthwick-Jackson took part in first-team training at Carrington today ahead of Manchester United’s clash against Southampton on Saturday.
The 18-year-old came off the bench at Anfield last weekend after Ashley Young had to be taken off with what has proved to be a serious groin injury and was extremely impressive.
If he can be as assured as he was away to Liverpool, the most hostile atmosphere of the season, then I have every confidence he can do it across the rest of the year at left-back for Man United.
Something which has frustrated me a lot since Shaw and Rojo’s absence is that Matteo Darmian has been forced into the left-back spot which has really hurt his own form. So, playing Borthwick-Jackson would allow Darmian to concentrate on being our first choice right-back once again.
There’s no point forcing two players out of position to try and cover Shaw, so hopefully Borthwick-Jackson will now get a run of games at left-back and show van Gaal he’s the best replacement for him this season.
