Injury roundup: Ashley Young absence adds to Louis van Gaal’s woes

by Ben Topliss

Manchester United’s defensive injury crisis went from bad to worse on Friday as Louis van Gaal confirmed that Ashley Young will be out of action for a “long time” with a severe groin injury.

Young had been performing excellently in recent weeks but he will be forced to undergo surgery on the problem.

He joins Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Antonio Valencia and Phil Jones on the treatment table, meaning van Gaal is now short of options at the back.

Meanwhile, Bastian Schweinsteiger will also miss the clash against Southampton this weekend due to injury. The German has been suffering from a knee complaint.

With Michael Carrick also sidelined, van Gaal may have to use Marouane Fellaini in the middle of the park once again in what would be a frustrating move for supporters.

United must identify how these injuries keep happening and strengthen the squad so they can cope with a busy fixture list in the second half of the campaign.
