Louis van Gaal confirms lengthy Ashley Young absence following severe groin injury

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed that Ashley Young will undergo surgery on a severe groin injury which will keep him out of action for “a long time”.

Young has been one of Man United’s better players as of late and the news will come as a bitter blow to supporters.

Meanwhile, van Gaal confirmed that Bastian Schweinsteiger and Phil Jones will both miss this weekend’s clash against Southampton due to injury. Adnan Januzaj, however, is available:

Young’s injury is a huge blow for United – playing in an unusual role at right-back, the Englishman had been tirelessly working up and down the flank in recent weeks.

His absence will likely mean that Cameron Borthwick-Jackson will be much more involved at left-back, with Matteo Darmian switching over to the right.

It is somewhat of a silver lining for United as Borthwick-Jackson and Darmian will be occupying their natural positions but it is worrying how threadbare the squad is looking heading into a crucial part of the campaign.
