Louis van Gaal reveals extent of Matteo Darmian injury

Louis van Gaal has revealed that Matteo Darmian was “spitting blood” after picking up an injury in Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat against Southampton on Saturday.

Darmian was on the receiving end of a heavy challenge in the second half at Old Trafford and he received treatment for several minutes.

Van Gaal revealed after the game that Darmian was taken straight to hospital following his substitution:

Darmian joins a lengthy injury list at the back for Man United, with Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Ashley Young also sidelined.

Van Gaal recently admitted that he is in the market for defensive recruits following the slew of injuries but buying in the January transfer market is easier said than done.

Paddy McNair played well in Darmian’s absence against Southampton but he cannot be relied upon to deliver on a consistent basis, particularly with United in an awful situation in the Premier League.
