Louis van Gaal: Manchester United’s win against Liverpool relieved some of the pressure on the team

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal believes some of the pressure has been lifted off his players following the 1-0 win against Liverpool last time out.

Man United secured a confidence boosting win at Anfield thanks to Wayne Rooney’s late winner, although they rode their luck at times against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Van Gaal insisted that United are always under pressure to win but that the three points against Liverpool lifted the mood in the camp.

“It is not interesting for me, it is only interesting for the players. The players play the game and have the resistance in the game, so I think the pressure is a little bit gone, but it would return if we lost against Southampton,” van Gaal said.

“It is always the same pressure for Manchester United – we have to win. Our fans are always expecting us to win, especially at home.”

There had been an aura of pessimism surrounding United in recent weeks following a dismal eight game winless streak in all competitions and a disappointing 3-3 draw against Newcastle United earlier this month.

However, a win against Liverpool is massively important to fans and van Gaal got exactly that at Anfield. While it was an excellent result, it is crucial that van Gaal builds up a head of steam with a run of victories, beginning with the match against Southampton on Saturday.
