Player ratings: Manchester United 0-1 Southampton

by Ben Topliss

David de Gea 6: Couldn’t do much about the winner

Borthwick-Jackson 6: Didn’t look out of place despite his tender years

Blind 5: Where was he for the goal?

Smalling 5: Same as Blind – how was Austin unmarked in the box?

Darmian 6: Got himself forward when he could. His injury is a worry

Fellaini 5
: Provided a physical presence for United in the middle of the park but rightly taken off at the break

Schneiderlin 6: Did his usual job but nothing spectacular from him. All at sea as Charlie Austin headed in

Lingard 5: Very quiet. Barely registered his presence in the first half

Herrera 6: Tried to make things happen in the final third. Adapted well to central midfield during the second half

Martial 6: Wasn’t afraid to run at his man but was dispossessed more often than not

Rooney 6: Failed to follow up his good form of recent weeks

Juan Mata 7 : Creative and adventurous. Should have started over Fellaini

Paddy McNair 6: Ventured forward and at least showed some positivity in difficult circumstances

Adnan Januzaj 6: Had a decent effort but didn’t have enough time to make a real impact
