Back pages: Louis van Gaal has third resignation attempt rejected by Ed Woodward

by Sam Peoples

Monday night’s newspaper back pages were once again dominated by Louis van Gaal and his future as Manchester United manager.

Adding to James Ducker’s reports on Sunday night that van Gaal had tried to resign twice already as boss, Jamie Jackson and Neil Custis both say the Dutchman tried, for the third time, to resign after Southampton but Ed Woodward convinced him to stay.

If true, the reports are nothing short of baffling.

Van Gaal has now returned to Manchester following a short break with his family back in the Netherlands and will take control on training on Tuesday.

We’ve all seen how the stories have developed and changed regarding van Gaal’s future at the club but this is the most intense and continued speculation there has been so far. It really isn’t looking good for him and him potentially leaving really does look like like a genuine opportunity.
