Louis van Gaal provides Bastian Schweinsteiger and Phil Jones injury update

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has insisted that fans must “wait and see” when it comes to the fitness of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Phil Jones.

Jones has been out of action since the start of the year with a foot injury, while Schweinsteiger is missing thanks to a knee complaint.

Van Gaal was coy when asked about the fitness of the duo as their injuries could have “developments”.

“I cannot say [if they are close to returning]. Every time I make a remark about injuries it is always difficult because injuries have developments and you have to wait and see,” he said.

The continued absence of Jones, in particular, is a source of frustration for United fans as he seldom manages to string a run of games together.

There were hopes that Jones would push on this season in the same way that Chris Smalling has but his defensive partner has left him behind. Time is running out for Jones to make an impact at United and the club may have to consider moving him on if he cannot be relied upon to be fit the majority of the time.
