Louis van Gaal has revealed that Ed Woodward rewards him with wine every time Manchester United defeat one of the traditional big six teams in the Premier League.
Woodward bought van Gaal a bottle after Man United’s win over Liverpool earlier this term but he only enjoyed it with wife Truus following the FA Cup victory against Derby on Friday.
Widespread reports this week suggested that Woodward convinced van Gaal not to resign after defeat against Southampton last weekend.
“We drink a nice bottle of wine, probably the most expensive wine, because I have received that from Ed Woodward,” van Gaal said after the Derby clash.
“I get always expensive wine when we beat an opponent of out the top six. I don’t want to mention the name because it is a little bit extravagant.”
It is clear that Woodward enjoys a good relationship with van Gaal and that he wants him to succeed.
Van Gaal has come under immense pressure in recent weeks but Woodward has refused to budge over his position at the club. It is worrying that Woodward holds so much power at United and he should be held as accountable as van Gaal should United’s campaign end in disappointing fashion.
