Louis van Gaal: I would have left Manchester United by the time Anthony Martial peaks

Louis van Gaal has insisted he will not be manager of Manchester United by the time Anthony Martial hits his peak.

Martial has been in superb form as of late, running riot in Man United’s victories over Derby County and Stoke City.

Against Stoke, the Frenchman curled in an excellent strike following a flowing team move involving Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata.

“It is very much surprising,” van Gaal said when asked about Martial’s emergence this term.

“You come from the French league, come to the Premier League and you do this at 20 then you have a lot of potential but then I am the manager not any more at that time when he is at his best.”

At just 20 years of age, it is scary how good Martial is, and indeed how important he is to this United team.

There is no doubt whatsoever that the Frenchman will grow into a world-class talent and it is only a matter of time until United fans see the best of him. The hope is that he stays injury free; on occasion a young player can be hyped up only to suffer burnout which stunts his progress. United will need to add depth in the squad in the summer to relieve some of the burden on Martial’s shoulders.
