Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian happy to make comeback from injury

Matteo Darmian has expressed his delight at returning from injury in Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Stoke City on Tuesday.

Darmian had been sidelined for a few weeks after picking up an injury against Southampton last month but he made his return to the starting XI against the Potters.

He put in a solid shift as goals from Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney wrapped up a convincing win for Louis van Gaal’s side. The Italian defender hailed the “great performance” after the match:

Happy to be back on field with @manchesterunited , great performance and win!

Darmian’s place in the side was under threat following Guillermo Varela’s excellent display against Derby in the FA Cup last weekend but he acquitted himself well over the course of the game.

It was feared that Darmian would be set for a lengthy absence as he was said to be spitting blood after the Southampton match but van Gaal will be grateful that he was back sooner than expected.

With United in the midst of a defensive injury crisis, they need everyone they can to be fit and ready as they enter the latter stage of the campaign.
