Former Manchester United midfielder Ray Wilkins has urged his old side to replace Louis van Gaal with Jose Mourinho following the news that Pep Guardiola will take over at Manchester City.
City confirmed on Monday that Guardiola will replace Manuel Pellegrini at the Etihad at the end of the campaign.
Wilkins insisted Mourinho would “put up a fight” against Guardiola if the Portuguese took over at Old Trafford.
“I don’t like to talk about a job when somebody is already in it but Jose would be the ideal person to go in to United and put up a fight against Guardiola,” Wilkins said.
“There’s no two ways about it because he has those characteristics in him. The Champions League is a massive lure and Manchester United have to end up in the Champions League because if they don’t they will have to buy the B player.”
If Mourinho did take charge of United, there would be narratives throughout the season: Mourinho vs Chelsea, Mourinho vs Guardiola, Mourinho vs Jurgen Klopp and Mourinho vs Arsene Wenger.
Of course, that is all dependent on Louis van Gaal’s exit, something which doesn’t look like it will happen anytime soon. The Dutchman survived a recent spell of sustained pressure over the Christmas period before his side but in a much improved performance against Stoke City on Tuesday.
