Andrei Kanchelskis believes in Memphis Depay and feels he has the potential to become the best winger in the world.
To say Memphis’ first season at Manchester United has been underwhelming is an understatement. The Dutchman, signed off the back of a wonderful season with PSV Eindhoven, came with plenty of expectation around him but hasn’t been able to live up to that just yet.
Looking at the bigger picture, Kanchelskis has no doubt Martial’s best position is up front and clearly has every belief in his ability to do it on the biggest stage.
“He is a very good player,” Kanchelskis said.
“He’s a skilful winger with good crossing ability and a great change of pace.
“He has the potential to become the best winger in the world.
“Martial is no out and out winger like Ryan Giggs was in his early days.
“His best position is attacking down the middle, that is where his future will be.”
Kanchelskis certainly knows a thing or two about entertaining Old Trafford crowds having won two Premier League titles with Man United between 1991 and 1995, scoring 28 goals along the way. In his pomp, undoubtedly his hat-trick against Manchester City back in 1994, Kanchelskis was so exciting and that “X-factor” is what Memphis is currently missing.
Like Andrei, I have every confidence in Memphis fulfilling his potential to become one of the best players in the world and think he will follow a similar trajectory at United which Luke Shaw has in that his second season saw him settle down and start to live up to expectations.
It’s been a tough start for Memphis at United but to use an old cliche, whatever doesn’t kill him will make him stronger and he’ll hopefully be using the experience of this season to better himself.
