Louis van Gaal: Luke Shaw could play in Europa League final

Louis van Gaal believes Luke Shaw could play in the Europa League final at the end of the campaign if Manchester United reach it.

Shaw is currently recovering from a double leg break suffered against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League in September of last year.

The 20-year-old was given a recovery time of six months and he could be available for selection in the latter stages of the campaign. Van Gaal insisted it is “not impossible” for Shaw to feature in the Europa League final on 18th May should United make it.

“He can play in the final,” van Gaal said.

“I have said that to him. That gives him spirit and a goal that he has to live for and it is not impossible, in my opinion it is not impossible.”

At such a young age, Shaw’s battle to return to fitness will be a difficult one for him to endure but it is good that van Gaal is giving him a target to reach for before the end of the campaign.

That being said, it is crucial that United do not rush him back too early and risk further damage. Shaw’s game relies heavily on explosive speed and he will want to be 100% before he steps back out onto the pitch. United have world-class facilities at their disposal and Shaw will be in good hands as he continues his recovery.
