Louis van Gaal has bemoaned Manchester United’s terrible injury problems which have rocked the team this season.
Players are starting to recover but plenty are still unavailable for Sunday’s game against Chelsea and van Gaal feels they’ve really impacted how we’ve been able to play.
“Of course,” van Gaal said when asked about whether United’s injuries have caused problems.
“I cannot prevent contact injuries and we were very unlucky with contact injuries at that time.
“We don’t have muscle injuries, only contact injuries and that is unbelievable. When you don’t have any full-backs you have a big problem because they are a big part of our game as they are always in attack.
“I played with Young at right full-back because he is an attacking full-back.”
Shaw’s injury in particular has had a substantial impact and only Cameron Borthwick-Jackson‘s emergence has given us that attacking impetus from left-back which we’ve missed so badly without Shaw. Memphis Depay‘s form has noticeably dropped off completely without his partnership on the left with Shaw and he’ll no doubt be looking forward to his return.
When it comes to title winning campaigns, you’ve got to get some luck with injuries and in that regard we certainly haven’t been helped this season but with 14 games to go, hopefully we can put those misfortunes behind us and actually kick on to make sure it isn’t a complete disaster by missing out on the top four.
