Timothy Fosu-Mensah head and shoulders above Norwich U21s

by Sam Peoples

Timothy Fosu-Mensah scored his first goal for Manchester United’s U21s during Monday night’s 7-0 drumming of Norwich City.

The 18-year-old, playing on the left hand side, completed a one-two with Memphis Depay before striding through to finish calmly underneath the helpless Norwich goalkeeper.

It was a goal which encapsulated his Man United career to date – calm, collected, composed and finessed.

Good win today Nice to score my first goal in the league @memphisdepay pass bro. ❤️??? #yenkoo ????

It’s taken Fosu-Mensah just 18 months to work his way through our U18s and U19s team and now he is scoring goals for our U21s.

Capable of playing at centre-back, left-back, defensive midfield, central midfield and attacking midfield, Fosu-Mensah’s style of play is the definition of versatility. It’s a trait which should see him accelerated into the first-team because it will give him so many more opportunities to play and I can’t wait to see him get his chances.

If Fosu-Mensah follows the same growth pattern over the next 18 months, then by the time be has turned 19 he will be in and around the first-team. So far, he’s looked ready for every level of football thrown at him and never looked under pressure, the same goes with his performances for the Netherlands U19s side.

Last week, Fosu-Mensah trained with the first-team players who didn’t feature against Stoke City so he is already in the mix which is pretty exciting. His next step is simply to continue what he is doing and wait for his opportunity from Louis van Gaal which is a case of when and not if, the only question is whether van Gaal would be at the club long enough to oversee that.
